My name is Kristen Janiak Goggin and I am currently serving as the Assistant Head of Middle School at Head-Royce in Oakland, CA. In this role, I spend most of my time developing co-curricular programs and collaborating with students and teachers. My current projects include developing advisory programs for grades 6-8, building restorative justice practices that align with our mission, and a year-long community engagement curriculum involving 20 different local partners. Before my current role, I taught math for over 20 years. I always pushed my students beyond mathematical concepts and used global and social issues to help focus inquiry and work with numbers in a real-world context. I disrupted traditional approaches and developed a culture where students expected Project Based Learning, Challenge by Choice and Student-Led Differentiation, Low Floor High Ceiling Tasks, and Blended learning. In addition to my role at Head-Royce, I also consult individuals and groups and facilitate professional development. I enjoy working with other independent schools and individuals. Collaboration, critical thinking, and wonder are essential skills that students must learn. I love creating those opportunities for them either through my role at Head Royce or coaching others. If you read my Stories from the Garage and find something interesting you want to reach out about - please do!
Originally from Dartmouth, Massachusetts, I graduated from Bishop Stang High School and attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. After graduation, I moved to Cornwall on Hudson, New York, to teach Algebra and Geometry at the Storm King School before moving to the San Francisco Bay area. Although I live in Marin County, I have held positions in San Jose, San Francisco, and now Oakland, CA. In my free time, I enjoy being active and spending time with my family. I start my day with a workout class at 5:30 am and end it with dessert and some TV. The magic lies in between.
